10:00am – 8:00pm
Details
Watch cricket played by local teams dressed in period costumes, competing for a 500 guineas prize. Spectators can also enjoy the stalls and activities around the perimeter. The rules for modern-day Cricket were set down by the Hambledon Cricket Club (Hampshire), started in 1750. It is known that cricket was played on The Butts in Jane Austen’s day. There is also an account of a two-day ladies’ cricket match in 1811, played at Newington Green in north London between Hampshire and Surrey teams - Hampshire won!
