Hampshire Regency Dancers are leading the dances: Regency Society – so many layers - the King, Dukes, Bishops - and their lives recorded in the names of the dances of this period: Vive le Roy; The Duke of Kent’s Waltz; The Bishop.
For Mrs Bennet in “Pride & Prejudice” the main concern was seeking out those in the upper layers of society – the eligible men of good fortune - to whom she could marry her daughters. Military men –The Young Hussar or a Captain in the Army- Captain McIntosh’s fancy; maybe a lawyer -The Irish Lawyer - but perhaps not The Mad Doctor !
Important in the interests of adding enjoyment to their lives but probably not seen as Bennet marriage material – composers of music – The Wandering Melodist, and actors – Actors and Amateurs. The Musgroves were certainly looking forward to their theatre trip in “Persuasion”. Of course we must not forget the delights found in The Milliner’s shop - so important to any young lady!
So many different jobs and trades are recorded for posterity in the titles of dances. Do join us at the Alton Assembly Rooms and enjoy dancing them at the Ball. Dress either in Regency Costume or smart Evening Wear.
During the interval there will be a light buffet and a cash bar for all your liquid refreshments. And if you want to brush-up on your dancing skills, we encourage you to attend the Regency Dancing Workshop taking place earlier in the day.
Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
Note that if you wish to attend the Regency Dancing Workshop earlier in the afternoon, you'll need to buy a separte ticket.
